1. "Declaration of Conscience" was a public statement (readable here) made by our old friend US Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R-ME) on June 1, 1950, that denounced the activities of Joseph McCarthy and HUAC.
It took until December 1954 for the Senate to censure McCarthy and bring his reign of terror to an end.
2. "The ball is round and the game lasts for 90 minutes" is a profound philosophical statement attributed to Sepp Herberger (1897-1977), manager of West Germany's national soccer team during their 1954 FIFA World Cup victory. That quote appears in Run Lola Run (1998) and The Miracle of Bern (2003); the latter dramatizes the 1954 World Cup final — an upset victory over Hungary's "Golden Team" — at Wankdorf (!) Stadium in Bern, Switzerland.
3. Blighia is a genus containing three extant plant species, including B. sapida (the source of ackee fruit). The genus was named for none other than William Bligh, who collected samples of ackee in Jamaica during his "second breadfruit voyage" (the first was the mutiny one) and brought them back to England.
